A 2001 study conducted on Four Mile Run, a heavily polluted stream in northern Virginia, used DNA analysis to determine that 42 percent of the controllable bacteria load in the water came from dog poop. That same polluted stream is just 9.4 miles long, but its watershed contains an estimated 11,400 dogs, which produce 5,000 pounds of poop every day. That’s an awful lot of fertilizer and even more bacteria.

Seasonal actions for water and soil health:

• Clean-up and set-up rainbarrels for the year. 
• Clean-up leftover sand, salt, and trash from the winter. Sediment and debris can also carry road gunk such as brake dust and oil into our waterbodies, especially when it's accumulated over the winter. 

Looking ahead: 

• With mowing season comes the need to sweep up grass clippings off of   driveways and boulevards and back onto the lawn. 
• Tree seeds and buds will be falling into the street - be ready to do the same as with grass clippings and sweep!
