The Lawns to Legumes program offers workshops, coaching, planting guides and grant funding for pollinator-friendly native plantings throughout Minnesota. As of summer 2026, residents have completed more than 12,500 plantings through the program, resulting in the establishment of over 20 million square feet of high-quality habitat.

This program is a partnership between the Minnesota Board of Water and Soil Resources (BWSR), Metro Blooms, and Blue Thumb - Planting for Clean Water. As a Blue Thumb partner organization, VLAWMO is part of a network of clean water and native plant stewards creating change by bridging the gap between knowledge and action, offering resources and programs to Minnesotans.

Grant Funding

All residents of Minnesota are eligible to apply for a Lawns to Legumes grant. There will not be a fall 2026 grant round for residents. However, Lawns to Legumes will open applications for spring 2027 grants in late summer 2026.

Minnesotans can sign up to be notified when spring 2027 Lawns to Legumes grant applications open on BWSR's apply webpage

Free Educational Resources

In 2026, BWSR and Blue Thumb launched Lawns to Legumes: Habitat at Home, a free, guided program to help Minnesotans create, expand, or care for pollinator-friendly spaces this fall. Participants will receive seasonal step-by-step guidance, access to webinars and resources, and opportunities to connect with a community across the state.
