Watershed Action Volunteers (WAV)
The WAV group is open to all residents of the watershed. Group meetings are typically held twice annually (spring and fall), with volunteer opportunities such as cleanup events, tabling, and project support taking place throughout the year. Creative ideas and a willingness to dig in are encouraged!

Minnesota Water Stewards (MWS)
This program certifies and supports community leaders to prevent water pollution and educate community members to conserve and protect our waterways. The program is a partnership between Freshwater and participating cities, counties, watershed organizations, and non-profits. VLAWMO is proud to be a partner organization and grateful for the dedicated Minnesota Water Stewards in our community.
How do I get involved?

- Contact staff to share your interest in the program. Get support from your local watershed and connect with others who have gone through the process.
Adopt a Storm Drain
Did you know that our storm drains send runoff directly to local lakes, streams, and wetlands? Leaves, grass clippings, and residential debris can all harm water quality. Only rain should go down the drain. The good news is: anyone can sign up to adopt a storm drain! Adopters can find a local drain, give it a creative name, and keep them clean on their own time.
How do I get involved?
- Visit the Adopt-a-Drain website to adopt a storm drain near you.
- Take 15 minutes a couple of times a month to make sure your storm drain is clear of trash, leaves, grass, road salt, and other waste. Click here for drain cleaning tips.
- Report your cleanings through your Adopt-a-Drain account.
- Spread the "only rain down the drain" message!
Community Science: Be an Otter Spotter
Otters are an important indicator of healthy lakes, streams, and wetlands, and they have been known to spend time in the VLAWMO watershed.
How do I get involved?
- Keep an eye out for otters as you explore the watershed! This helps build understanding of otters and local water quality.
- Learn more and report a sighting on the Otter Spotter page.
Photography
VLAWMO is always on the lookout for visuals to help share the beauty of our watershed. Whether water scenes or wildlife, we love seeing and highlighting resident photos! These help us share our watershed's story and inspire stewardship action. All photos are credited according to submitter's preference.
How do I get involved?
- Capture watershed photos as you go.
- Send any photos, background stories, and crediting information to staff.
